Mayan Civilization

The Mayan civilization encompassed all of the Yucatán Peninsula in present-day Mexico and parts of present-day Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador. Ruins of Mayan cities, which serve as an indication of the skill and artistry of their architects, have been discovered throughout this region. For reasons unknown, the Mayan Classic period ended about AD 900.

Mayan Ceramic Figure

The Mayans of Pre-Columbian America depended on maize for their subsistence. This ceramic figure was made by a Mayan artisan (c. 600-800). It is a representation of a maize god, with jewellery in the form of kernels and an elaborate headdress. The piece was originally brightly coloured. The figure's simplified form is characteristic of Mayan ceramic work.
